On April 28, 2024, the Digital Strategies team of the Great Commission Movement of Ghana (GCMG) organized an engaging and insightful training session for the youth of International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) in Cape Coast. The event, titled "Cyberspace Menace: Addressing the Effects of Social Media," aimed to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with social media and provide practical strategies for safe and balanced digital engagement.
Led by Eunice Nartey, GCMG’s Director of Digital Strategies, the session focused on educating the youth about the negative effects of social media, such as anxiety, low self-esteem, and the dangers of online predators. The program featured group discussions and presentations on key topics including positive uses of social media, managing screen time, and preventing cyberbullying.
The training, which attracted 41 participants, was designed to provide the youth with actionable steps to develop healthier online habits. A survey conducted prior to the event helped tailor the content, ensuring it addressed the participants' real-life experiences and concerns.
Interactive sessions encouraged open dialogue among the youth, helping them reflect on their social media behaviors and explore solutions to common challenges like social comparison and online harassment.
The event was well-received, with attendees expressing gratitude for the practical tips shared. “I now have a better understanding of how to balance my time online,” one participant said. Despite a brief challenge with sunlight affecting the slides, the program was successfully executed, concluding with a Q&A session and a call for future policy advocacy and continued youth education on digital safety.
The Digital Strategies team remains committed to empowering young people to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
