Challenge Tagline: There is a need for training of young people on safe uses of the internet and social media.
The primary goal of this training is to educate and empower mainly generation Z and generation Alpha youth regarding the positive and negative aspects of the internet, particularly in the realm of social media. By shedding light on the adverse effects of irresponsible online behaviour, identifying common cyber threats, promoting positive social media practices, and offering guidance on addiction management, we aim to equip the youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital landscape safely and responsibly.
Digital has penetrated every aspect of human life. For Africa, we usually find ourselves trying to catch up on new technologies considering the speed with which technology has evolved and progressed. Unfortunately, our inability to stay ahead of technological developments is costing us hugely in investments and, more dire, the future of our children.
Several surveys conducted by the Great Commission Movement of Ghana have revealed that young people between the ages of 12 and 21 are exposed to cybersex, cyber bullying and pornography among other vices through the internet and social media. Some of these young people have experienced negative repercussions of this exposure including addiction to these vices and suicidal thoughts. The surveys reveal that more than 50% of these young people do not confide in their parents when they go through such experiences, a phenomenon which is leading to unbearable consequences for African families.
